This is a free event for World Green Building Week – Priority booking for IGBC members
The National Gallery’s refurbishment of the Dargan and Milltown wings at Merrion Square was managed by the OPW with Heneghan Peng as the consultant Architects. The refurbishment which will be open to the public shortly, has greatly improved the Gallery’s ability to protect, preserve and display their collection and ensures the Gallery is equipped as a world-leading space to meet the international standards for the presentation of its art.
The project required the addition of air conditioning to the historic galleries in order to provide an environment that can protect works of art, while also retaining the visual quality of the spaces. The project presented significant challenges in the working within the existing building space constraints that were not originally designed to support an extensive air conditioning network.
The project also improved visitor flow through the gallery, recovered an external courtyard as useful exhibition space and improved the fabric performance of the galleries. The environmental strategies include a four pipe heat pump, an ice bank storage system and a combined heat and power unit, but the most important elements of energy conservation strategy is buildings control strategies which adjust the conditioning systems to meet demand.
The tour will be led by Roisin Heneghan – Director of Heneghan Peng Architects who will outline the architectural approach to the project and Chris Croly – Director of BDP who will explain the environmental control strategies used within the project.
This event is organised as part of the Build Upon Project.
