What If Buildings Were Designed as Reusable Assets?

Most construction today still follows a largely linear model:

Design → Build → Use → Demolish → Waste

Buildings are often delivered as one-off projects with limited adaptability, difficult reuse, and fragmented supply chains.

But as the industry moves towards lower-carbon construction and circularity, a different approach is emerging – one that treats buildings as long-term reusable assets rather than disposable products.

Event Overview

In this Lunch & Learn, Dr Renee Puusepp will share practical insights from circular modular construction projects and digital building system development across Europe and Asia.

Drawing on real-world case studies from Estonia, Germany, and South Korea, the session will explore how:

  • Design for Disassembly and Adaptability (DfDA)
  • Modular construction systems
  • Digital integration and interoperable supply chains

…can support more adaptable, reusable, and lower-carbon buildings at industry scale.

The discussion will also examine what these lessons could mean for Ireland’s growing ambitions around timber construction and offsite manufacturing.

What You’ll Learn

  • Why many modular buildings are not truly circular
  • How Design for Disassembly (DfDA) supports long-term reuse and adaptability
  • The role of digital workflows in connecting architects, suppliers, and manufacturers
  • How interoperable product ecosystems can improve circularity at scale
  • What Ireland can learn from international leaders in timber and modular construction

Who Should Attend?

This session is relevant for professionals across the built environment, including:

  • Architects and architectural technologists
  • Engineers and sustainability consultants
  • Modular and offsite construction specialists
  • Timber and mass timber professionals
  • Developers and asset managers
  • BIM and digital construction professionals
  • Manufacturers and suppliers
  • Policymakers, planners, and researchers

If you are interested in circular construction, low-carbon building systems, or the future of industrialised construction, this session is highly relevant.

Speaker

Dr Renee Puusepp

Dr Renee Puusepp is the founder of Creatomus Solutions and a Senior Researcher at the Estonian Academy of Arts / Timber Architecture Research Centre PAKK.

His work focuses on modular construction, circular building systems, digital supply-chain integration, and industrialised timber construction. Over the past decade, he has worked across both research and industry to develop adaptable modular systems, configurable design platforms, and practical Design for Disassembly approaches.

His experience spans public buildings, educational facilities, manufacturer-integrated digital tools, and international modular construction ecosystems.

Why This Matters

Delivering a circular built environment will require more than better materials — it will require rethinking how buildings are designed, assembled, adapted, and reused over time.

This session offers practical international insights into how that transition is already happening.
