Launch of IGBC’s Roadmap to Decarbonise Ireland’s Built Environment – #BuildingLife

On October 7th, IGBC is launching “Building a Zero Carbon Ireland: A Roadmap to decarbonise Ireland’s Built Environment across its Whole Life Cycle”. The roadmap was developed in close cooperation with over 200 key stakeholders across the entire supply chain and presents a set of specific recommendations for policymakers, educators, investors, as well as the property and construction industry to halve our sector’s emissions by 2030. 

The development of the roadmap was informed by the “Whole Life Carbon in Construction and the Built Environment in Ireland” report that the IGBC’s commissioned to the Building in a Climate Emergency (BIACE) Research Lab, UCD School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy. The report shows that the built environment the construction and built environment sectors account for 37% of Ireland’s carbon emissions, equalling agriculture. Just under two-thirds (23%) of these emissions come from operating buildings but more than a third (14%) comes from the manufacture and installation of building materials themselves – usually referred to as ‘Embodied Carbon’.  It also shows that without urgently addressing these embodied carbon emissions, the construction and built environment sector will exceed its 2030’s carbon budget. 

AGENDA

The “Building a Zero Carbon Ireland” roadmap was created as part of the #BuildingLife project. Similar roadmaps were developed in Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and the UK, as well as at the European level. These will support the work of officials at local, national and EU levels. 

#BuildingLife is a project led in Ireland by the Irish Green Building Council. The initiative aims to achieve the mix of privasector action and public policy necessary to tackle the whole-life impact of buildings. Learn more here.
