Last week, the Irish Green Building Council took part in World Green Building Week 2021. This year the focus was on how the holistic approach to building resilience can accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals and sustainable buildings for everyone, everywhere.
As per last year, we celebrated WGBW 2021 organising virtual events. Here are some highlights of the week.
Build Upon Virtual Summit
We kicked off the week with an international event, the Build Upon Virtual Summit. The event brought together hundreds of leaders from industry, public sector and civil society in an online conference. The central theme was how leaders can work together to deliver the EU Renovation Wave and the EU Green Deal. During the event, Marion Jammet, our Head of Policy and Advocacy, presented the Renovation Framework, a multi-level energy renovation impact framework developed and piloted by 8 cities in Europe, including Dublin.

During Renovation Wave 2021, IGBC’s annual energy renovation conference, we are going to launch the Irish version of the Renovation Framework. Register here now.
Lunchtime webinars: Climate Change Adaptation & ESB Headquarters
On Wednesday, we hosted a very insightful webinar where Alan Fogarty, Sustainability Partner at Cundall, presented on how developments need to be designed to be able to withstand the impacts of climate change. The presentation was followed by a panel discussion on how to plan for resilience.

On Tuesday, Chris Croly from BDP, presented a case study on the new ESB offices in Fitzwilliam Street. His presentation offered a view of next generation sustainable design in large office buildings.

Re-source 2021
Finally, we wrapped up the week with an online conference on how to reduce embodied carbon in construction. The conference, showcasing a range of initiatives and solutions available that address embodied carbon, was a huge success. The attendees could get loads of information from the best experts in the industry. The attendees learnt about several collaborative initiatives that share information about green designs, materials and benchmarking tools.
“Really enjoyed that. I felt like I was observing a meeting where opportunities to collaborate and share experiences were emerging everywhere. It was a great example of how an online conference can work better than the live alternative, as the speakers were completely unhindered in their engagement with each other.”
Robbie Cousins, Editor at Irish Construction News/constructionnews.ie
“IGBC are doing a great job promoting these events, big kudos to you.”
