Introduction to Specification & Design of NZEB Buildings – Online Classroom

This Engineers Ireland course aims to educate the construction industry in the requirements of deep renovating homes in Ireland. It will cover all elements of upgrading the building fabric of an Irish building. It will cover wall, floor and roof upgrades, required regulations, ventilation, air-tightness, interstitial condensation. This blended learning programme consists of:

  1. Online modules to be taken in advance of –
  2. Expert Led Half day Q&A session on 1st October 2020. This is a virtual classroom in which participants will require access to a webcam and microphone for live sessions with the trainer throughout the morning.

Participants will receive login details via email.

As with the traditional classroom delivery of our courses, class sizes are limited to allow opportunity for all delegates to participate.

 

Learning Objectives

  • Enable attendees to be in a position to recommend upgrades to Irish homes while taking into account all the required regulations, thermal, moisture, space and cost regulations and constraints.
  • Allow attendees to identify the types of construction and how best to approach the upgrade.
  • In addition, ventilation and internal air quality are of primary concern in Irish buildings which will be a focus of one element of the course, providing mechanisms to assess and design upgrades to home air tightness and ventilation to improve health and reduce energy costs.

This course does not cover heating systems. We recommend the course Specification & Design of Heating Systems with Heat Pumps – Online Classroom, taking place on 22nd October.

Online Modules

In advance of attending the live interactive Online Classroom, attendees will complete the online modules and undertake the quiz following each module.

Module 1: Introduction and the current retrofit challenge in Ireland

Module 2: Legislation & building regulations: Overview

Module 3: Building Physics How energy is used in and flows through buildings

Module 4: Identification, sources and solutions for each element upgrade

Module 5: Airtightness & Ventilation: Moisture Movement

Module 6: Key Junctions and Thermal Bridging

Trainer Profile

Declan Daly, SuperHomes Programme Manager, Tipperary Energy Agency

Declan Daly is the SuperHomes Programme Manager and joined the agency in July 2016. He has an Honours Degree in Sustainable Energy Technology B.Eng and a Diploma in Construction Management. His area of responsibilities are project management of SuperHomes “one stop shop” deep retrofit scheme implementing energy upgrades on domestic buildings. This includes carrying out energy site audits, procurement of energy projects, designing and sizing M&E, contract negotiation, and directing work according to the scheduling methodology for the retrofit program. Declan has worked on the design, procurement and project management of a deep retrofit of 260 dwellings across Ireland.
