Clúid was established in 1994 and has grown to become the largest housing association in Ireland. Clúid provides over 5,000 of the 27,000 housing associations homes available in Ireland. Housing associations are independent, not-for-profit charities that provide affordable high quality housing for people who cannot afford to buy their own home or pay for private rented housing. There are currently nearly 90,000 households on local authority waiting lists for social housing. At a time of a growing need for social housing, Clúid’s work has never been more important.
Clúid work in numerous different ways to encourage and facilitate the development of sustainable communities in their housing schemes. These are communities where as many people as possible are economically active; where the services people need are available; where the neighbourhood is safe and free from anti-social behaviour, and where residents feel a sense of belonging.
