From design for compliance to design for performance – Design4Zero

Design4Zero was launched to help put Ireland on a pathway to a net zero carbon built environment aligned with the proposed Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) recast. This initiative will develop a “Design for Performance Framework” to promote and support a “Design for Performance” approach for achieving Whole Life Net Zero Carbon performance.

Design4Zero will also agree on guidance Net Zero Carbon performance targets for the Irish market, focusing on 4 parameters:

  1. Operational Energy
  2. Embodied Carbon
  3. Potable Water
  4. Health & Wellbeing

To maximise industry impact, the Design4Zero Framework will;

  • be used to update the RIAI’s 2030 Climate Challenge
  • be integrated into the Home Performance Index (HPI)
  • Inform Green Public Procurement (GPP)

A stakeholder engagement process will ensure that tools developed are highly practical and implementable, as well as provide useful guidance and insights to policymakers involved in the design, planning, procurement, and regulation of the built environment.

The Framework will be widely disseminated throughout industry, including through a comprehensive training programme aimed at building designers.

 Design4Zero is led by the Irish Green Building Council in partnership with RIAI. It’s funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) under its National Energy Research Development and Demonstration Programme.
