The measurement of the impacts of our construction products is becoming increasingly important.
For buildings built to the NZEB standard embodied impacts can represent 50% of the total life cycle carbon. Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) are the building blocks for assessing the embodied environmental impacts of buildings. These are also becoming increasingly important within Building assessment methods such as IGBC’s own Home Performance Index, BREEAM international 2016, LEED V4 and an essential component of DGNB. IGBC is establishing a National programme for EPD in compliance with EN 15804. IGBC is a member of EcoPlatform the European organisation of EPD programme operators, and is committed to the harmonisation of EPD across Europe to ensure specifiers can rely on the information provided.
IGBC will be developing a national database of EPDs over the next year and is encouraging Irish manufacturers to measure and declare the impacts of their products. We also provide training to engineers, architects and other professionals in the use of whole building LCA using software such as One Click LCA.
