The measurement of the impacts of our construction products is becoming increasingly important. We encourage the use of 3rd part verification through the use of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) These are becoming increasingly important within Building assessment methods. Sustainable construction products and materials are of particular interest to the IGBC as they are part of the supply chain and essential to achieving a sustainable built environment. In addition, the IGBC is committed to supporting Irish companies who export construction products and materials to countries where demand for responsibly sourced materials is growing exponentially and will continue to grow. In order to be at the forefront of innovation and product development the Irish market must fully understand the issues and challenges faced and what is now expected. It is essential that Irish companies maintain their competitiveness in the market and look to achieving the environmental standards necessary to compete in countries which have adopted advanced policies and standards for the manufacturing of products and materials in the built environment. If they are to increase their markets they need look beyond the UK to mainland Europe where in many ways certification standards for materials are higher.
The move to measure sustainability is driven by both legislation and by private organisations looking to meet corporate social responsibility goals. The demand for information on the impact of construction products and materials is increasing. As the European Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) requires a move to nearly zero energy buildings by 2021,this means that the embodied energy and carbon of products will be become a larger percentage of the overall impact of new buildings.
