Professor Susan Roaf presents: Sustainable Buildings & Cities
The UCD Earth Institute is delighted to invite you to attend the next public lecture to be presented by Prof. Susan Roaf, Professor of Architectural Engineering at Heriot Watt University on Wednesday 4th March in the Royal Irish Academy. Susan is an award winning teacher, architect, solar pioneer and author of 17 books. Having worked around the world in archaeology, anthropology, landscaping and architecture her focus now is on adaptive design for resilience and comfort in a rapidly changing world.

Lecture Topic
The talk starts by tracing the history of architectural responses to the challenge for modern designers of designing to both mitigate and adapt to the risks and opportunities posed by climate change. In the 1990’s our response was to work on energy efficiency, by the 2000’s we had moved into the much broader field of Sustainability and as the growing realisation of the seriousness of the challenges began to register the design aims are in the direction of building resilience at building and city level. In the talk we will outline design, policy and regulatory trends in relation also to the falling cost of renewables, un-predictably priced energy, food and cost of living and demographic changes.
Professor Susan Roaf Biography
Susan Roaf, B.A.Hons, A.A. Dipl., PhD, ARB, FRIAS, FRSA, FRSS, WCCA, is Professor of Architectural Engineering at Heriot Watt University and an award winning teacher, author and editor of 17 books, architect, a renewable energy pioneer and an Oxford City Councillor for seven years. Her research covers Windcatchers, nomadic architecture, traditional technologies, Mesopotamian archaeology, photovoltaics, Ecohouse, Low Carbon, Resilient and Sustainable building design and Thermal Comfort. She is on the Boards of ISES Solar Cities and Communities Network; AES Solar Ltd.; ICARB: The Initiative for Carbon Accounting; Adaptation theme at the Edinburgh Climate Ex Change and the Resilient Design Institute in New York. Recent awards for 2013 include Top 6 – UK ‘First Women’ Awards in the Built Environment 2013‘; Top 10 ‘Women in Architecture’ Awards, Architect’s Journal, London, and the most influential academic in the field of Sustainable design nominated by the AJ in 2010.
