The embodied impacts and sustainability of construction products will become increasingly important when the Nearly Zero Energy Buildings requirement comes into force after 2018. For new buildings embodied impact will account for nearly half of the whole life cycle impacts. The assessment of embodied impacts of buildings through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) could become as ubiquitous as carrying out a BER.
However Ireland is far behind other European countries in LCA measurement. What does Ireland need to do to catch up, and what skills and data are needed for this to happen? Do Irish manufacturers engage with the issue of sustainability of construction products and do we have the professional skills to start measuring whole building impacts? Who will lead on this?
We hear from two experts on the experience of Finland and Holland, two countries leading in mainstreaming the measurement of embodied impacts and LCA and promoting awareness of the sustainability of construction products
