Housing ourselves cooperatively
The idea of ‘Co‐Housing’ was developed in Scandinavia in the 1980s and is growing in popularity around the world. Composed of private homes with many shared facilities, a co-housing is planned, owned and managed by the residents. As well as being more affordable these co‐operatives can provide a greater sense of wellbeing and sustainability.
The event aims to bring together people interested in setting up co-housing projects with local authority representatives, community development agencies, planners, architects, building contractors and social finance organisations. We will examine the barriers to establishing co-housing, explore how we can overcome them and popularise this model of housing in Ireland.
Speakers include Joe Atkinson and Celia Ashman residents of LILAC, the UK’s first affordable ecological co-housing project, a community of 20 households and a common house in Leeds; Stephen Hill, chair of the UK Cohousing Network, the promotional body for independent groups of residents wishing to provide their own group housing solutions based on cooperative and sustainable lifestyles; Rosie Lynch, who will present ideas behind the Nimble Spaces initiative including plans and research into developing inclusive and supportive neighbourhood clusters in her area, and Dermot Sellars the Policy and Communications Manager of NABCO, who will give an introduction and overview of co-operative housing. Davie Philip, who is involved in Cloughjordan Co-housing, will be outlining their plans and facilitating.
