Do you want to learn more about biodiversity in the built environment?
The IGBC masterclass will be using the design and application of green infrastructure to deliver measurable gains in biodiversity.
Who is this training for:
Developers, planners, architects, landscape architects, or any other planning/building/environmental professionals
Why consider this training:
- The publication of the 4th Biodiversity Action Plan includes a target for all Public Authorities and private sector bodies to move towards no net loss of biodiversity through strategies, planning, mitigation measures, appropriate offsetting and/or investment in Blue-Green infrastructure.
- A number of countries and the EU taxonomy for sustainable activities introduce new requirements on biodiversity and the built environment
What will the training include:
This masterclass will cover policy and economic drivers, as well as how and when to design and specify green infrastructure to meet biodiversity net gain outcomes. The masterclass will also include extensive case study references to show how biodiversity can be successfully integrated within the built form.
What are the learning outcomes;
The importance of biodiversity and threats posed to nature
Policy & legislative drivers relating to biodiversity & the built environment
An understanding of the concepts of green infrastructure (GI), nature-based solutions (NBS) and biodiversity net gain (BNG)
The benefits of biodiverse GI for people and business
Forms & functions of differing GI typologies
How and when to design and specify GI to meet BNG outcomes
How to calculate BNG on development projects
No previous experience or knowledge of biodiversity or green infrastructure is required. The session will encourage open discussion and questions so that attendees can get the most from their time.
Feedback from previous Biodiversity Masterclass
“The Masterclass was very informative with many useful examples.”
“Very informative, learned so much about Green Infrastructure and alternative ways to measure biodiversity“
“Morgan was an engaging and expert speaker”
“Very informative and sets the basis for considered design.”
Who is the trainer?
Morgan Taylor (MSci, MCIEEM, CEnv) leads the biodiversity and natural capital team at Greengage. He works to deliver Biodiversity & Environmental Net Gain (BNG and ENG) and improvements in ecosystem service provision, completing wider climate change adaptation measures.
Morgan has sat on the panel for the UKGBC’s Nature Based Solution Steering Group, CIEEM’s Action 2030 Climate Change response group as well as the British Standard for Biodiversity Net Gain working group. He also contributed to the UKGBC’s “Demystifying Green Infrastructure” guidance document. Morgan is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), a Full Member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) and holds survey licences for bats and dormice.
Morgan’s policy reviews and think-pieces have been published in In Practice, GRESB insights, Land Journal and Property Journal, as well as various other industry websites and blogs. Morgan is a regular on the speaking circuit and has spoken at academic and industry events and conferences on the design and delivery of biodiverse GI and ecosystem services, including conferences run by the BBP, BPF, RTPI, Footprint+, University of Greenwich and BCT.
Morgan has previously run internal training for the likes of British Land, Grosvenor, Place Services, Lloyds/UKGBC, RIBA Northwest, Canary Wharf Group, Lendlease and many others on how to optimise green infrastructure design and biodiversity through the planning process.
