The construction sector is crucial to Ireland’s social and economic development. However, it also poses environmental challenges and significantly contributes to climate change. Construction and the built environment account for 37% of Ireland’s emissions, with 14% of that coming from embodied carbon emissions linked to the production of materials and their transportation, construction practices, maintenance, repair, and disposal of buildings and infrastructure.
The DECAR-CON project will set a baseline for carbon emissions at construction sites in Ireland and develop a roadmap with solutions for decarbonising contractors’ construction processes (Modules A4 & A5 of BS EN 15978), accommodating variations depending on the project.
Baselining the carbon emissions associated with construction processes will allow the project team to:
- Enhance carbon reporting for construction site activities (CSRD, Scope 1 and Scope 2)
- Formulate a roadmap for transitioning to complete fossil fuel-free zero carbon construction sites by 2035.

The project is led by the University of Galway (UG) in partnership with the Irish Green Building Council (IGBC) and funded by Construct Innovate in collaboration with John Paul Construction and Walls Construction.
