IGBC Host World Green Building Council VP

January 19, 2012 at 5:00 PM

The Irish Green Building Council hosted a lunch for the vice President of the World Green
Building Council, Michelle Malanca today in Odessa Restaurant. Michelle has worked as the technical
director with the Australian Green Building Council, and served on the US Green
Building Council LEED Implementation Advisory Committee. Michelle is also
Co-Chair of the Sustainability Committee for the Urban Land Institute (ULI) San
Francisco District Council.

This was attended by members of the Irish Green Building Council and guests from major
Irish and international companies from the entire supply chain to the built
environment.

This was an opportunity to hear at first hand from Michelle the transformative role Green Building
Councils are playing right around the world. She talked about the astonishing
growth of councils all of which has taken place during the most difficult years
from 2008 to 2012. This has grown from 26 councils to 89 in just four years. She
discussed a number of inspiring case studies of different councils in countries
as varied as Colombia, Singapore, and Australia, and how they have
created transformative change through influence on Government. She also emphasised
how councils were very much involved in  transformation at city and community level not
just at the building level. She spoke about the importance of councils
including all the parts of the supply chain to buildings and communities for
the entire life cycle of the building not just at construction stage as the management
and retrofit of building were of critical importance in reducing carbon
emissions, waste and water use. The presentation can be downloaded here

Michelle stated 'Thank you for graciously hosting me today.
It was a pleasure to meet your Board and founding members and to learn more
about the IGBC vision and its plans for 2012. Your team and member network show
real leadership, as well as a deep understanding of green building and the
opportunities for transforming the building industry in Ireland. We
look forward to watching you grow and play a vital role in this global movement'

The IGBC had a chance to discuss in dept with Michelle the
further development of the Council in Ireland.
